Julia Gabriel Foundation Teaching Certificate – Speech & Drama

Schedule Two evening workshop sessions per week (2½ hours per session) covering theory and practical elements at Julia Gabriel Centre

Class attachment 1½ hours per week

Join us for an exciting multi-modular part-time training programme to learn about teaching Speech and Drama for children. The Julia Gabriel Foundation Teaching Certificate (Speech & Drama) programme involves a series of evening workshops in which you’ll discover how Julia Gabriel Centre’s well-established EduDrama® techniques can be used to develop children’s confidence, expressiveness, creativity and language skills.

Additionally, each participant will gain hands-on experience in a 10-week attachment to a Speech and Drama class at Julia Gabriel Centre, with weekly 1-1 mentoring sessions during the attachment period.

The programme focuses particularly on teaching Speech and Drama for children aged 3 to 9, although many of the techniques participants learn can also be used in working with other age groups.

Programme Structure

Module A: Using Drama to Enhance Children’s Learning

Module B: Confident Communication & Effective Use of the Voice

Module C: Engaging Children Through Storytelling & Literature

Module D: Speech & Drama Teaching Practice & Assessment

Modules A – C can be taken in any order. Module D must be taken in the
participant’s final intake. (Participants can study all four modules in one intake if they choose to or they can spread the modules over multiple intakes.)

Participants who do not currently have formal qualifications in education, child development or other related fields, also need to take the Julia Gabriel Initial Certificate (Child Learning & Development) (see details below).

Registration

Participants may choose to register for all the modules in one intake if they wish to complete the programme in a shorter period of time.

Alternatively, participants may register just for Module A, B or C (or a combination of these modules) in one intake, and then complete the other modules in later intakes in order to attain the Julia Gabriel Foundation Teaching Certificate (Speech & Drama). Module D must be taken in the participant’s final intake.

It is fine if a participant wants to do just 1 or 2 modules as individual workshops initially, and then decide if they want to go on to complete the full Julia Gabriel Foundation Teaching Certificate (Speech & Drama) programme after that.

Pre-Requisites

Background Qualifications

Participants who do not currently have formal qualifications in education, child development or other related fields, need to do the Julia Gabriel Initial Certificate (Child Learning & Development) in order have the appropriate background knowledge to attain the Julia Gabriel Foundation Teaching Certificate (Speech & Drama).

The Julia Gabriel Initial Certificate (Child Learning & Development), which consists of two modules, can either be done before joining the Julia Gabriel Foundation Teaching Certificate (Speech & Drama), or can be done in the same intake as some or all of the Julia Gabriel Foundation Teaching Certificate (Speech & Drama) modules.

Language Requirements

Participants who wish to study the full Julia Gabriel Foundation Teaching Certificate (Speech & Drama) programme (including Module D), need to have a level of spoken and written English language which will enable them to pass the final assessment and moderation at the end of Module D.

Anyone who registers for all four modules in one intake will be called for an admission interview so we can make an assessment of this.

Anyone who registers for Module D after having completed other modules in an earlier intake may also be called for an admission interview (unless instructors from earlier modules are able to confirm that the applicant has a strong enough level of English language to be able to pass Module D).
