“Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth.” – Oscar Wilde

Why do people wear masks? What is the meaning behind them? What is the history or mystery surrounding different types of masks from around the world?

Masks have been a part of human culture for centuries. They have served a wide variety of purposes in dance, theatre, festivals, rituals and entertainment.

Miriam Baker, a JGC journalist, is embarking on an ambitious project to produce a documentary entitled ‘The Truth about Masks’ which will air in December 2019.

We are offering the opportunity to budding journalists and history buffs to join Miriam’s team and help her discover the truth behind different masks. We will unravel these mysteries using a host of drama activities inspired by stories, poems and factual reports. Students will create their own masks and prepare a journal recording their discoveries. They will also collaborate as a group to produce a documentary which will be premiered on the final day of this exciting adventure, in front of an invited audience.

‘To mask, or not to mask’… come and be a part of this exciting mission to produce an unforgettable documentary on masks!
