Trips and Special Events
Festivals
Different cultural festivals are celebrated in Chiltern House such as the Chinese New Year, Easter, Deepavali, Hari Raya and Christmas. On these special festive days, children are encouraged to come to school dressed in ethnic costume and there are special assemblies held to add to the festive cheer. During the special assembly, teachers talk about the reason for celebrating the festivals, and folk tales and stories are shared.
Field trips
Chiltern House children from Nursery 2 to Kindergarten 2 go on field trips each term. During these special trips, parents are encouraged to join in, help out and get involved. Some places the children have visited are; Singapore Zoo, the Philatelic Museum, the Kid’s Kampong and the Botanical Gardens.
Kindergarten 2 children are taken on a specially arranged visit to a primary school to introduce them to the primary environment. They have the opportunity to purchase food from the canteen since they will have to manage money in this way once they attend primary 1.
Kindergarten 2 children also go on a Mandarin language field trip. This might involve going to a library with conversations held in Mandarin throughout the trip.
Chiltern House Special Events
1. Book Week
Book Week takes place in Chiltern House for one week each term. During this period the children are encouraged to bring in their favourite book to share with their friends and teachers. It is also a time to explore how books are made, to understand the different sections of a book, how to take care of books, and why books are of such great importance to us all. Book Week culminates with a ‘Book Character Parade’. Children and teachers come to school dressed as their favourite book character. This is great fun for everyone taking part.
2. Sports Day
Sports Day is held in a local sports stadium with parents, teachers and children taking part in a series of events that include warm up exercises, sack jumping, running, throwing and catching, as well as singing, before relaxing and cooling off with a nice, cold ice lolly! The day ends with a prize giving ceremony and the presentation of rosettes to all the children. The event ends with the sporting parents and teachers race.
3. Kindergarten 2 Celebration Evening
The Kindergarten 2 Celebration Evening happens at the end of each accademic year. This is a very special time for the children as they are the presenters and actors for the night. There is also a mini exhibition in which the creation of the performance pieces is captured. The children write and present their thoughts about the part they play in the show, their thoughts about the evening and the making of the props. At the end of the evening the children are presented with a Chiltern House Certificate File.
4. Carnival
Parents, children and teachers celebrate the end of the year together by hosting a carnival. Everyone participates in games and various fun filled activities. There is a café and a beauty parlour, to name a few of the ‘places’ the children can visit. Everyone joins together to sell food items in order to raise funds, which are then donated to a charity. The charity chosen for the last few years has been the Children’s Cancer Society.
